Boyfriend Is Proud

Why?  Because out of the 15 surf spots listed in ‘Surfin’ USA’, he’s surfed 11.

If everybody had an ocean
Across the U.S.A.
Then everybody’d be surfin’
Like californ-I-A
You’d see ’em wearin’ their baggies
Huarachi sandals, too
A bushy bushy blonde hairdo
Surfin’ U.S.A.

You’d catch ’em surfin at Del Mar (nah)
Ventura County line (yes)
Santa Cruz and Trestles, (yes and yes)
Australia’s Narrabeen, (not yet)
All over Manhattan, (all over)
And down Doheny way (yep)

Everybody’s gone surfin’
Surfin U.S.A.

We’ll all be plannin’ out a route
We’re gonna take real soon
We’re waxin’ down our surfboards
We can’t wait for June
We’ll all be gone for the summer
Were on safari to stay
Tell the teacher we’re surfin’
Surfin’ U.S.A.

At Haggerty’s and Swami’s (I’ve been to both as well.  Sharktopus too)

Sharktopus Eats Surfers As A Side Dish

Pacific Palisades (that’ll be an affirmative)
San Onofre (yes) and Sunset (no)
Redondo Beach, L.A. (absolutely)
All over La Jolla (without a doubt)
At Waiamea Bay (nope)

Everybody’s gone surfin’
Surfin’ U.S.A.

Everybody’s gone surfin’
Surfin’ U.S.A.

Yeah, everybody’s gone surfin’
Surfin’ U.S.A.

This past weekend we visited Encinitas, a pretty little beach town about 15 miles outside of San Diego.  Here, Boyfriend surfed Swami’s, named after Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, founder of the Self-Realization Fellowship.  One of its locations is here, built in 1937.  Boyfriend was thrilled to finally surf these hallowed waters.

  1. What??? No phone call & in my backyard? Nooooo! Bummed to have missed you

  2. That is a very impressive feat! With his very impressive feet! 😛

  3. Love it! I never really “got” that song until I moved to California, and then I was like, hey I know that place… and that place… and that place… 🙂

  4. Color me impressed! So hwo long before he gets the remaining 4?

  5. How fun! And I always love a good Sharktopus cameo!

  6. Clearly, you need a Pacific trip, to Australia via Hawaii.

Also, it’s good to see Sharktopus again. I hope he becomes a regular feature.

  7. Boyfriend’s list is nearly complete. He’ll have to find a new song challenge soon 🙂

  8. More things in life should be correlatable to Beach Boys songs. It would be endless summer!

  9. That’s a cool goal, to surf all the places in that GREAT song. Your post brought back fun memories of life in CA. I’ve been to that sweet little town of Encinitas. Swami’s–I love it. Both the name and reason for it. It is so California.

  10. The Beach Boys song reminds me of our trip to Florida when the kids were small – we were singing along to “Kokomo” for a good part of the 24 hour (one way) drive down there and almost as much on the way home!

  11. I’m kinda surprised about Sunset, Waiamea and Del Mar.

  12. What i it about surfing, even if we don’t do it? I love surf songs (ok, yeah, the Beach Boy) and had an Endless Summer poster in my room through high school and read books about surfing and yet – have not yet surfed! Just love the sun, the water, the promise of freedom on the water, the surf “set.”
Bravo to Boyfriend for “hitting” the list – which he’ll no doubt accomplish completely.
What fun reading the words to Surfin’ USA. Believe it or not, there were a few words I’ve had “wrong” all this time.
